FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ~ Professional Studio Policy ~The Selling of Digital Files...
At this time it is my business and personal policy NOT to sell the release of my digital files to portrait clients. This is and has been a very controversial topic for professional photographers for as long as we have been shooting digital cameras. Previously, in the film days, professional portrait photographers were never asked to sell their negatives. Everyone knew that this was their source of income and completely out of the question. Today, with so many people shooting digital (pros and non-pros alike) and with the Internet and market being totally flooded with images, it has become a very gray and much argued area.
It is my opinion that my portrait photography is more than just a digital file. It is my reputation at risk if I allow my files to be scanned, printed, or re-printed by anyone other than my professional lab. I would have no way of controlling how the final outcome appears. Along with that is the risk of tarnishing my name because potential clients would see me and my work as 'up for sale' or 'throw away'.
Secondly, It is my business at risk because the permission to reproduce my files means that, in the long run, my clients will not be returning for quality products and resources.
If this is a very important need for you, please consider this before booking an appointment with this studio.
Federal Copyright and model release...
It is my business policy for every client to sign a mandatory model release at the time of their session and an acknowledgement of Copyright. A model release simply put, allows this studio to use my images of you in a decent and professional way for advertising purposes such as website or display or promotional pieces. The Copyright Act protects this studio by giving me the exclusive right to reproduce my photographs. This includes the right to control the making of copies. It is illegal to copy, scan, or reproduce my images elsewhere without my permission.
Facebook...
I occasionally post images to facebook. These are files of my choosing and at my discretion. They will be extremely low resolution files with my studio logo across it. You may use my image of you on your page for your profile avatar, however, the studio logo must clearly appear with it. These images are not to be cropped or altered in any way. And please remember, these are copyrighted files and may not be reproduced in any way except for use as mentioned above. Thanks.
